Financial Literacy & Investment Opportunities We Financial Literacy & Investment Opportunities

Welcome to the series on all things financial literacy & investment opportunities where we would take a deep-dive into everything relating to your finances.
Have you ever wondered why your income grows, your bills grow and you still end up being broke? This comes as a result of lack of financial planning.
Ever wondered why people who win the lottery still end up broke?
We will be shedding light on the common pitfalls people make while giving you insights to Financial Planning.

Getting it wrong
Little Kudus (KD) grew up in an obscure little village where his parents could hardly afford 3 meals a day and could not afford to educate their kids beyond secondary school. KD however was very bright and got a scholarship to university and after that a good job with a bank.
As soon as he got a job, he moved out of Ajegunle where he was staying with his uncle, to Surulere and bought a brand-new car on lease and started wearing designer clothes. KD was very hardworking and got promoted regularly. With every promotion came a new toy, be it a new sound system, play station, more expensive clothing, a better car and trips to abroad. He went to all the hot spots in Lagos and now lived in Lekki Phase 1.
Then came a recession that caused the banks to layoff workers. KD though a performer, lost his job as well. He went home to his house in Lekki to reflect on his life and suddenly realised that he had not saved more that N400,000 in his 5 years of work. He had spent everything living in the fast lane. To make it worse, he owed money against his salary for month end, which was not forthcoming.

Financial Planning 101
Step 1: Create a budget
• Track monthly income and expenses.
• Save before you spend

Step 2: Emergency Funds
• Keep a set amount aside on a monthly basis to take care of your health….Afterall health is wealth!
• The typical emergency fund is 3-6 months set aside for your living expenses…Refer to step 1, have you created your budget?.

Step 3: Your Financial Plan
• Write down your SMART goals which need to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable (Achievable), Relevant and Time-bound.
• Review your lifestyle, spending
